Dan Snaith completed his PhD in mathematics at Imperial College London in 2005, the same year he released his first album as Caribou. Sam Shepherd completed his PhD in neuroscience and epigenetics at University College London while quietly building the tracks that would become Elaenia, his debut album, released November 6, 2015. Two producers, two doctorates, one shared instinct: electronic music is a system of problems worth solving with total seriousness, and the answer, when you get it right, should feel like release.
The academic footnote matters more than it might seem. Snaith's mathematics background shows up in the structural logic of his records, the way a Caribou track will hold a groove in tension, looping and accumulating small variations until the change, when it comes, feels both inevitable and surprising. His 2020 album Suddenly, his ninth studio record and fifth as Caribou, released February 28 on Merge and City Slang, was built from roughly 900 draft ideas that he cut down to 12 tracks. That process, the obsessive narrowing of an enormous field of possibility toward a single elegant solution, is what mathematicians do. The single "Never Come Back," released January 29, 2020, carries that quality: it circles its own hook with the patience of something being proven, not performed.
Shepherd's neuroscience and epigenetics training pulls in a slightly different direction. Where Snaith builds from song architecture outward, Shepherd tends to work from texture and sensation inward, asking what a sound does to a nervous system before asking what it does to a structure. Elaenia, written over five years while he finished his degree, was produced entirely by Shepherd and featured a live ensemble that included two drummers, Tom Skinner and Leo Taylor, bassist Susumu Mukai, violinists Qian Wu and Edward Benton, cellist Joe Zeitlin, violist Matthew Kettle, guitarist Alex Reeve, and vocalists Layla Rutherford and Rahel Debebe-Dessalegne. The result sits somewhere between post-rock and jazz fusion, with electronic production holding the whole thing together at the molecular level. Cascade, his third studio album, released September 13, 2024 on Ninja Tune, pulls hard the other way: club-weight electronic music that topped the UK Dance Albums Chart. The range across those two records alone covers the same territory Caribou mapped between Our Love (2014) and Suddenly.
What makes them genuinely worth placing in the same conversation is the way they respond to the same formal problem from opposite poles. Caribou approaches the dancefloor from the direction of the song: warmth first, groove as vehicle, hooks that earn their repetition. Floating Points approaches it from architecture: he builds the room before he invites anyone in, and the emotional payoff arrives as a structural consequence. Both methods produce music that rewards the kind of listening that goes beyond passive reception. When Floating Points remixed "Never Come Back" and "Sister" from Suddenly, released as a limited 12-inch on June 30, 2020, the results were a producer taking Snaith's warmth and running it through his own spatial logic. The fit was immediate. The audience for both records is the same person: someone who wants to feel the drop and also understand why it works.
The 2024 albums, Caribou's Honey (October 4, on Merge and City Slang, his sixth record under the Caribou name) and Floating Points' Cascade, arrived within three weeks of each other and together made a quiet argument about what this particular corner of electronic music can still do. Honey opened with the title track, a single released April 8, 2024, that moves with the unhurried confidence of someone who has already proven the point. Cascade, recorded across studios in London and California, topped the UK Dance Albums Chart on release, confirming that Shepherd's move toward full club weight had landed. Both artists have, across more than two decades of work, built bodies of music that hold together as systems. The dancefloor is where those systems get tested against bodies, and both of them take that test seriously enough to keep revising their answers.
