Formed in 1999 in Astoria, New York, the power-pop combo 10 Heads High originated with singer Marc Lombardo and guitarist Tommy Kohl. Michael Borenstein secured the bassist role as the group's sole auditionee, yet securing drummer Brian King demanded a far more extensive hunt; King had previously played in the neo-psych outfit the Anderson Council. Several self-released singles, among them "My Summertime," "Celebrated," and "Stepchild of a Genius," came before the band's first full-length release, From Here to Tupelo, which arrived in October 2002 on the PileOn label after production by Claudius Mittendorfer and Bart Migal.
