Violinist Mark Emerson, born on 15 August 1958 in Ruislip, Middlesex, England, originated this singular endeavor during 2001 as a celebration of the 350th anniversary marking John Playford’s The English Dancing Master, which contains tunes and directives for English country dances. Having delved into Playford’s collection earlier while performing with the well-loved Pyewackett, Emerson enlisted the talents of two prominent folk artists for the undertaking: button accordionist Andy Cutting, born 18 March 1969 in Harrow, Middlesex, England, along with double bass player Tim Harries, born in England. The Beautiful Jo label issued Cast A Bell during the summer of 2001, yielding an innovative and daring album that brought Playford’s material into contemporary awareness.
