Eddie Garcia channels his skills as a musician and recording engineer into the project known as 1970s Film Stock, shaping intricate abstract soundscapes that combine electric guitar with extensive electronic textures. Garcia maintains his base in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where he first picked up the guitar during his preteen years and began capturing his own compositions at age 13 by means of the family VCR. Throughout his teenage period he balanced performances with various bands, independent study of recording techniques, and live sound duties for other Winston-Salem acts. In 2004 he played a key role in establishing the hard-edged indie rock group Jews & Catholics, which developed a dedicated local audience through its appearances on the Winston-Salem club circuit. After several years with the band, Garcia joined the staff of public radio station WFDD-FM in Winston-Salem as an engineer, producer, and arts-focused reporter. The 2014 dissolution of Jews & Catholics, prompted by the members’ shifting personal obligations, prompted Garcia to explore more experimental and introspective music. Working alone with multiple effects units, he adopted the name 1970s Film Stock for this solo endeavor and issued its debut album, Hand Painted, in August 2015. The single “Palace Number 3” appeared the following year, and the project’s second album, Birds, was released in August 2017.
