Drawing heavily from the 1960s garage rock pioneered by 13th Floor Elevators, 1986 delivers gritty, saloon-style indie rock through Giorgio Angelini on vocals and guitar, Cully Symington on drums, and Drew Pennebaker on bass. After leaving his role as drummer in indie pop band the Rosebuds, Angelini encountered Symington in Austin and the pair spent three months jamming until Angelini reconnected with longtime acquaintance Pennebaker, unseen for a decade. Despite cycling through several second guitarists, the band held steady as a trio. Their initial release, a locally self-issued EP, included guest spots from Jeff Pinkus of Butthole Surfers and Bill Elm of Friends of Dean Martinez. Palentine Records issued the full-length Nihilism Is Nothing to Worry About in July 2006, featuring production and guitar from Mark Deutrom of Melvins along with mixing by Thom Monahan of Pernice Bros and Silver Jews.
