Biography
Established in 1982, the 29th Street Saxophone Quartet brought together altoists Bobby Watson and Ed Jackson, tenorist Rich Rothenberg, and baritonist Jim Hartog. Positioned as hard bop’s counterpart to the World Saxophone Quartet, the part-time group has nevertheless cut several sessions for Red and Antilles. Even while remaining inside the straight-ahead idiom, the ensemble has shown itself to be notably exploratory.
