The project 2nd Gen embodies Wajid Yaseen's fusion of electronica, industrial, and hip-hop sounds. Born in Manchester to an Indian devotional singer, Yaseen first engaged with music by providing backing vocals for his father. Teenage exposure to punk and underground rock eventually led him to bass duties with Fun-Da-Mental in the mid-'90s. Working alone, he pursued more extreme directions and issued his debut EP, Noise Sculptures, in 1997, an aptly titled showcase for his heavily processed, sliced and diced sound loops. Novamute signed him the following year, issuing the Against Nature EP that brought hip-hop beats into his sonic arsenal, while he began constructing his first full-length album in 1999. Early 2001 saw the single And/Or, featuring remixes from Techno Animal, Cold Kid, and Si "Buckfunk 3000" Begg, appear shortly before 2nd Gen's debut album Irony Is, which also included contributions from Gallon Drunk's James Johnston.
