The rock outfit 30 Odd Foot of Grunts came into being in 1992 and included Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe among its members. Long before that point Crowe had already issued solo singles, while his musical collaboration with Billy-Dean Cochran dated back to their teenage years in New Zealand, where the pair performed together in the band Roman Antix. The two relocated to Australia in 1987 and later crossed paths with brothers Dave Kelly and Garth Adam. Once drummer Don Brown and guitarist Mark Rosier joined the lineup, the ensemble adopted the name 30 Odd Foot of Grunts. Brown and Rosier had already left by the time the group recorded its 1998 album Gaslight. Trumpeter Stew Kirwan came aboard that same year, and singer Dave Wilkins completed the transformation into a sextet. Artemis put out Other Ways of Speaking in 2003, the successor to 2001’s Bastard Life or Clarity and the Texas DVD that appeared in 2002.
