Though hailing from South Central Los Angeles, 3rd Degree stands apart from the standard gangsta rap archetype. Thoughtful instead of thuggish and inventive rather than combative, he projects an upbeat outlook while projecting optimism. Streetwise from experience, he navigated an upbringing surrounded by Crips and Bloods along with the cycles of gang activity and crack dealing. Born Wayne Guillory—a surname tracing back to Louisiana roots—his firsthand knowledge of urban hardship led him to reject that route entirely. He gravitated toward hip-hop early, having grown up near WC of Westside Connection. He also went to Washington High School, known as Hip-Hop High and the same institution that produced West Coast figures including WC, Crazy Tunes of the Maad Circle, Yo-Yo, DJ Alladin, and Sir Jinx. His mother’s gift of turntables one Christmas, coming after his father, a coach, succumbed to cancer, further steered him toward the craft. Years of dedicated writing and persistence eventually opened the door to the indie rap scene, where he became the first artist to release a project on Blak Ice Records, the independent Los Angeles label headed by I. “Ice” Jones. The resulting album, The Pedestrian, pairs 3rd Degree with producer Yabie for twenty-one tracks free of filler, underscoring his drive and imagination. He participates not for celebrity or wealth—though sustenance matters—but to share a talent he views as divinely granted. The lead single “Do My Thang” captures this stance, underscoring his refusal to fabricate personas and his conviction that rappers should address the realities they inhabit rather than aspirational fantasies.
