Formed in 1994 in Los Angeles, the short-lived art-pop outfit 3rd Matinee was assembled by songwriter and keyboardist Patrick Leonard—widely recognized for his production work with Madonna—and vocalist/guitarist Richard Page, previously of Mr. Mister. The project served as a follow-up to Leonard’s prior band Toy Matinee, which had featured co-leader Kevin Gilbert and issued a self-titled album that reached the charts in 1991. Leonard and Page had already collaborated on several songs, among them Madonna’s hit single “I’ll Remember.” Drummer Brian MacLeod, guitarist Tim Pierce, and bassist Guy Pratt had all played in Toy Matinee, while guitarist Marc Bonilla had served as a touring member; the lineup was rounded out by session keyboardist and Toto alumnus Steve Porcaro. Reprise Records quickly signed the group on the strength of its commercial promise and issued the album Meanwhile on April 26, 1994. The release failed to connect with audiences, however, prompting the band’s dissolution, after which Leonard resumed his production career and Page embarked on a solo path.
