Accompanying the celebrated Dominican world music figure Juan Luis Guerra is the ensemble 440. The group, whose title derives from the standard A-note tuning frequency measured in hertz, assembled for the first time in Santo Domingo near 1984 while laying down tracks for what became Guerra’s initial release, Soplando. Its original lineup consisted of Guerra together with the vocalists Maridalia Hernández, Mariela Mercado, and Roger Zayas-Bazán. Before long the unit functioned chiefly as support for Guerra’s performances, a shift that grew more pronounced once co-lead vocalist Hernández departed in 1988 to launch her own acclaimed solo path. Marco Hernández stepped in as her successor and was later succeeded by Quico Rizek. Adalgisa Pantaleón took over Mercado’s role in 1991, though Mercado herself made occasional appearances on later Juan Luis Guerra y 440 recordings.
