Biography
The electronica outfit A Certain Frank brought together Frank Fenstermacher and Kurt "Der Pyrolator" Dahlke, each previously part of the German new wave group Der Plan, a band frequently acknowledged for shaping contemporary German electronica acts like Mouse on Mars and Kreidler. In addition to his Der Plan tenure, Dahlke had collaborated with D.A.F. and released material as Pyrolator. Following the 1992 dissolution of Der Plan, the pair devoted time to managing their Ata Tak imprint, yet their production and remix projects prompted a return to the studio by 1996 for the release of A Certain Frank's debut effort, No End of No. Better distribution accompanied 1998's Nobody? No!, which helped cultivate a global audience among electronica enthusiasts. That record adopted a broader stylistic range than its predecessor, tempering the techno focus with infusions of pop, lounge, downtempo, and trip-hop while incorporating more acoustic musicians. The same sensibility extended to the duo's next release, 2001's Nothing, which included vocal contributions from Karin Knipphals and Mai Lingani alongside a rhythm section featuring Pascal Plantinga on bass and Mike Daliot on drums.
