A Halo Called Fred, an acoustic quartet tagged “happy folk,” weaves in electronic samples, whimsical lyrics, Beatles-inspired vocal blends, and kitchen utensils. The group first appeared in 1995 at a coffeehouse in New Brunswick, New Jersey, where Geverend Dee on guitar and vocals joined Brushwood Thicket Farmer on percussion and trinkets; bassist Jim Bob Rubbernecker came aboard soon after, leading to the 1996 release of their debut EP Chester’s Dozen. Gerrymiah T. Bullfrog then joined on guitar, and the band issued its first full-length album, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, shortly thereafter; Rubbernecker’s move to Salt Lake City preceded the 1999 arrival of the group’s final record, Necessity Is the Motherfucker of Invention.
