A Kite Is A Victim

Florida-based soft rock outfit A Kite Is a Victim, occasionally shortened to AKIAV among supporters, devoted numerous seasons to performances at neighborhood clubs, coffeehouses, and any available venue. The ensemble habitually appeared in all-black attire, delivering sets whose tone tended toward hushed, gentle, and sometimes melancholy expressions. Its lineup featured acoustic guitarist, songwriter, and vocalist Al Galvez alongside bassist Henry Rajan and percussionist and drummer Ulysses Perez. The relentless cycle of shows under a demanding itinerary allowed the musicians extended opportunity to refine both technique and presentation while sharing bills with acts such as Cerberus Shoal, the Van Pelt, Retsin, Low, and Sonora Pine.

The year 1998 marked the release of the band’s first full-length recording, the Space Cadette Records album simply titled Home. Its tracklist centered on emotionally resonant love songs and understated romantic pieces including “While Danny Sleeps,” “Open Book,” “Message Me Never Again,” “Home to Your Ghost,” and “All You Have to Do.” Although the music itself proved engaging, the packaging drew particular notice: each cardboard CD sleeve arrived individually handpainted in ink watercolors, adorned with an attached soft feather, a small quantity of white beach sand, and an accompanying booklet of lyrics, photographs, and illustrations.

More than two years elapsed before A Kite Is a Victim completed work on its second album, Strange Delight.
