A. Savage serves as the performance alias for Andrew Savage, who helped establish the indie rock outfit Parquet Courts while also carving out space for separate solo work. His 2017 debut under that name, Thawing Dawn, centered on shadowy melodic compositions charged with sharp tension and dry humor in a streamlined presentation, though it also included several slower, introspective passages. The 2023 follow-up Several Songs About Fire displayed greater clarity and assurance while remaining anchored in the style listeners associate most closely with him.

Born in Denton, Texas, in 1986, the singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Andrew Savage joined the formation of D.I.Y. punk group Teenage Cool Kids in 2006. That project gave him early experience with self-booked tours, independent releases, and hands-on record distribution. While tracking the band’s second album in 2008, he began working with Jason Kelly on the more expansive and exploratory effort Fergus & Geronimo, which went on to issue multiple albums and singles in the ensuing years. A relocation from Texas to Brooklyn in 2010 prompted Savage to start Parquet Courts and wind down Teenage Cool Kids activities, leading to the latter’s formal dissolution in 2011. The release of Parquet Courts’ 2013 album Light Up Gold drew strong interest from both critics and audiences, positioning the band as the most prominent of Savage’s concurrent projects. An unbroken pattern of touring, recording, and album output followed for most of the next decade, including international dates and four full-length releases between 2014 and 2018. Savage created the cover and packaging artwork for the 2016 album Human Performance, which earned a Grammy nomination, and he later supplied cover art for Jack Cooper’s 2017 solo album Sandgrown. Under the A. Savage name he issued Thawing Dawn on his own Dull Tools imprint in 2017. After completing Parquet Courts’ 2021 album Sympathy for Life and its supporting tour, he devoted time to visual art and occasional DJ sets before beginning work on another solo record. Several Songs About Fire appeared on Rough Trade in 2023 under the A. Savage moniker, with Savage undertaking solo dates in support.
