Tatsuya Nakatani works as a percussionist across numerous groups active in the New York and Boston regions. His approach places equal weight on exploring timbre and shaping rhythm, often incorporating bowing methods along with an array of unconventional auxiliary percussion tools alongside a standard drum kit. Originally from Japan, he took up drumming at fifteen and studied under Yasuhiro Yoshigaki, whose own credits include time behind the kit for Altered States and Otomo Yoshihide. After relocating to the United States in 1995, he quickly began collaborating with free improvisers such as Masashi Harada and Sabir Mateen. He became a member of the ultra-quiet Nmperign in time to appear on the ensemble’s 1998 release 44'38"/5. The following year he recorded two separate trio projects—one featuring Dan de Chellis and Philip Tomasic, the other pairing him with percussionist Curt Newton and nmperign trumpeter Greg Kelley. Over the ensuing period he performed alongside an eclectic range of musicians that included James Coleman, Jim Hobbs, Peter Kowald, and Nat Baldwin. In 2001 he contributed percussion to Coleman’s Zuihitsu CD.
