Abandon Jalopy served as the banner under which former Blind Melon bassist Brad Smith—later a member of Unified Theory—assembled a set of introspective compositions. Work on the material began in the wake of Blind Melon frontman Shannon Hoon’s death in 1995; although an issue was planned for the late ’90s, the project remained shelved until summer 2002, when it appeared on Smith’s own Stank Face Laboratories imprint. Issued under the title Mercy, the album included contributions from former Blind Melon members Roger Stevens, Christopher Thorn, and Glenn Graham, as well as former Edie Brickell/Pearl Jam drummer Matt Chamberlain and Squirrel Nut Zippers trombone player Jim "Jimbo" Mathus, among others. Smith further promoted the release with a summer 2002 tour.
