Biography
Originating from El Anasser in Algeria, rai performer Abdel Ali Slimani acquired guitar skills during adolescence and played drums at local soccer matches. Scant prospects for musicians prompted his 1982 relocation to Paris, after which he settled in London and worked as a club DJ before joining ex-PiL bassist Jah Wobble’s Anglo-Arabic ensemble Invaders of the Heart as vocalist and percussionist. In 1996 Wobble co-produced Slimani’s debut solo album Mraya, whose tracks illustrated the integration of his rai-rooted Algerian background with Western musical influences.
