Listen on Coda
Mali native Abdoulaye Diabaté, serving as both vocalist and drummer, fused the traditional West African timbres of balofon and ngoni with keyboards and computer programming. His approach remained grounded in the Bombara style associated with Wassolou performers such as Oumou Sangare, while his vocals were distinguished by an unusually raw texture. Diabaté first sang and played drums during tribal celebrations from a very early age. He refined his stage abilities through membership in several musical theater troupes. In 1976 he entered the Orchestre Regional De Segou. Early notice arrived when he served as lead singer for Koule Star of Koutalia and for Kéné Star of Sikasso. With Kéné Star he earned first place at the Biennales competition. Although he issued recordings under his own name starting in 1988, Diabaté continued performing with musicians from Kéné Star. New releases appeared regularly through the late 2010s. Abdoulaye Diabaté died on January 16, 2025, at the age of 65.
