In the realm of Sufi music, Abida Parveen stands out as an uncommon female lead performer. Born to the prominent Pakistani vocalist Ustad Ghulam Haider, she benefited from his unconventional choice to train her despite prevailing norms and often joined him at religious events while developing her voice. After initial years of refinement, she wed Ustad Hussein Sheikh, an influential producer at Radio Pakistan whose guidance advanced her path. Further instruction arrived from the great Salamat Ali Khan. Numerous albums, compilation contributions, and repeated world tours have since established her as the most successful female Sufi performer and one of the form’s notable figures overall.
