The London-based Abjects channel a high-octane garage rock approach that weaves in surf textures, psychedelic edges, and vocal harmonies while revealing an encyclopedic grasp of rock & roll history. Their first singles captured the ragged, low-fidelity charm of forgotten cuts from a Pebbles anthology, yet the 2019 debut album Never Give Up brought greater studio force and landed in the same blistering, high-intensity zone occupied by contemporary acts such as Thee Oh Sees.

Noemi, a Spanish singer and guitarist, launched the trio in 2013 after growing weary of performing in other ensembles and resolved to compose material on her own terms. She recruited her acquaintance Yuki, a onetime J-pop performer with no prior bass experience yet rapid aptitude, and completed the lineup with Italian drummer Alice. The group began performing across London and the broader U.K., where their aggressive, densely layered garage rock quickly attracted an audience. The “Fast Love” single appeared in 2013, after which the band traveled to Japan to support Guitar Wolf. Their next release, the Gone EP, came out on Stolen Body Records in 2015; the following year they issued the “Double Bind” single on Brooklyn’s Greenway label and played several U.S. dates. Upon returning to London the unit fractured, with Yuki returning to Japan and Noemi moving to Barcelona. Throughout the break Noemi continued developing new songs, and when the members reconvened for a 2017 Japan tour they arrived with fresh material. They tracked these compositions at Ranscombe Studios alongside Jim Riley, whose ties to Billy Childish and the Medway garage rock community, together with his commitment to tape-based recording, they had long respected. The finished Never Give Up revealed greater sonic force and addressed topics ranging from Brexit and romantic loss to resilience in the face of hardship; Yippee Ki Yay Records issued the album in early 2019.
