Robert Brown launched Abney Park in the early 1990s after departing the University of London to immerse himself in the underground electronic music scene, later moving to Seattle at the height of the grunge era. Standing apart from the city's prevailing flannel-and-infrequent-hygiene aesthetic, he assembled the dark electronica projects October 27th and the EaTen. A modest roster shift within the EaTen led to the formation of Abney Park in 1997, which carried forward the brooding industrial trip-hop direction of Brown's previous work. That aesthetic appeared on a self-released, self-titled album issued in 1998.
