Biography
Absolutely Free emerged in 2012 as a Toronto-based Canadian experimental pop trio. The band rose from the remnants of the art punk outfit MM/DD/YYYY, whose abstract tendencies aligned closely with their own. Drawing on Krautrock, psychedelia, African polyrhythms, and early electronic music, they issued the well-regarded singles UFO/Glass Tassle in 2012 and On the Beach/Clothed Woman, Sitting in 2013. Producer Mike Haliechuk of Fucked Up and Austra then joined them to shape their eclectic self-titled debut LP. The group has since presented its hypnotic, off-kilter take on pop music at major North American festivals including SXSW, NXNE, Pop Montreal, and CMJ. Following their signing to the Canadian indie label Arts & Crafts, the trio released that first LP in October 2014.
