Biography
Established in the mid-'80s in Macon, Georgia, by identical twins Alvin and Calvin Black—whose legal surname was Waters—the band stood among the final self-contained R&B acts alongside Mint Condition and Tony! Toni! Tone!, though AC Black enjoyed far less commercial traction. Regional gigs across Georgia and neighboring states built a loyal audience drawn to the ensemble’s high-energy, precisely choreographed shows. Powerfully soulful lead vocalist Kelvin Jones, multi-instrumentalist Tracey Orr, and keyboardist/programmer Brian Haught supplied the core lineup. After signing with Taj/Motown Records, the group issued its sole album, the self-titled AC Black, in 1989; the project contained the minor hit “Funky Situation” yet never connected with a wider listenership. By the early ’90s the members had ceased activity following tours that extended through the Southeastern United States and Japan.
