Formed in 2000 as an outlet for singer/songwriter Alan Charing, A.C. Cotton took shape when he linked up with bassist Todd Corbett, guitarist Brett Davis, and drummer Sean Oldham. Charing had already drawn critical notice through his 1999 solo album Seconds West, which appeared on the Seattle indie imprint LazyBones after the 1997 EP A Boy and His Dog and before the 2000 EP All This All or Nothing issued under the Alan Charing Controversy name. That album attracted widespread praise from outlets nationwide and caught the eye of MTV, which slotted several tracks into The Real World and Undressed. NBC likewise used a pair of compositions on Providence. A.C. Cotton put out its debut album Half Way Down in 2001 and backed the release with performances at the Sundance Film Festival and the North By Northwest Music festival plus extensive club dates across their home Northwest territory.
