Originally assembled as a four-piece unit while attending a military academy, Acidman spent a few years honing their craft away from the spotlight. Following some adjustments to the lineup, the band issued their first single, "Sekitou," in 2001; it climbed the Japanese indie charts with notable speed, attracting enough attention to secure a contract with EMI. After polishing their approach, they merged earlier singles with fresh tracks on the 2002 album Sou, which entered the mainstream Top Ten upon release. Buoyed by growing visibility, the group delivered Loop the following year, then paused briefly to steer their style toward greater catchiness. On Equal they finalized that shift, settling into a bright, melodic framework that proved even more inviting to Japan's pop-oriented audiences. Momentum carried forward through the fan and sales growth of 2005's And World and 2007's Green Chord, while the band also evolved its approach by emphasizing guitar lines and adopting a collaborative songwriting process. High chart placements for 2008's Life sustained that trajectory. Although faint punk traces surface—prompting occasional classification in that vein—the connection extends only to the adventurous spirit heard in the Police and the Clash. Acidman's guitar work remains airy and tuneful, with bass providing the primary drive and only sporadic drum-kit force suggesting any punk roots; everything else stays rooted in melodic pop.
