Adam & Eve

The Germany-based pop duo Adam & Eve first paired American expatriate Johnnie Christian Dee with Czechoslovakia-born Eva Bartova, earning their primary recognition through the Sonny & Cher-like 1966 single "They Can Look at Us and Laugh." Before the act took shape, Dee had composed multiple songs for the Pretty Things, among them "Don't Bring Me Down." He relocated to London, England, in 1969 and faced arrest there for operating a prostitution ring in tandem with vocalist Janie Jones. Bartova later teamed with her husband Hartmut Schairer as the replacement Adam, allowing the pair to sustain a modest schlager career that extended into the early '80s. Cancer took Bartova's life in 1989. Dee died in 2004 after serving a German prison term for stabbing a girlfriend and then escaping custody.
