Adam Guettel stands out as a multifaceted creator who serves as lyricist, composer, and musical supervisor while embodying the spirit of a genuine New York City original. Equally at ease in opera and pop idioms, he carries forward a distinguished heritage as the son of respected composer and performer Mary Rodgers and the grandson of Richard Rodgers, the Broadway and Hollywood icon behind Rodgers & Hammerstein. Through this background Guettel has demonstrated his own merit. He has delivered well-received projects for signature Manhattan venues including the New York Theatre Workshop and the New York Shakespeare Festival, earning honors such as the Stephen Sondheim Award and the ASCAP New Horizons award. Working alongside John Guare, he created Love's Fire for the Acting Company as well as Saturn Returns: A Concert at the Public Theatre/New York Shakespeare Festival; both pieces appeared on Nonesuch Records in 1999. The same imprint had earlier issued his 1997 conceptual folk/classical work Floyd Collins. Following these releases came Light in the Piazza, a song cycle that recalls the work of David Ackles and Tim Buckley.
