Adam Lambert stands out as a compelling stage presence whose powerful tenor voice fuses his background in theater with elements of classic rock, shimmering glitter, and dance-pop. Rising to prominence as the second-place finisher on the eighth season of American Idol in 2009, he quickly built both commercial traction and critical praise through solo projects such as the 2009 release For Your Entertainment and the 2015 album The Original High, each reaching the third slot on the Billboard 200; the earlier record also yielded the Grammy-nominated single “Whataya Want from Me.” As an LGBTQ+ performer, Lambert has earned two GLAAD Awards and became the first openly gay artist to top the Billboard 200, accomplishing that milestone with 2012’s Trespassing. Beyond his individual catalog, he assumed the role of his idol, the late Freddie Mercury, serving as lead vocalist for the iconic rock band Queen and maintaining a regular touring partnership with the group since 2011. In 2020 he channeled his wide-ranging glam-rock, pop, and funk influences into his fourth studio album, Velvet, before paying tribute to his musical heroes on the 2023 collection High Drama.

Born Adam Mitchell Lambert in 1982 in Indianapolis, Indiana, he spent his formative years in San Diego, where his stage career began around age nine through appearances in area theater productions. During his teenage years he immersed himself in singing and acting at Mesa Verde Middle School and Mount Carmel High School, distinguishing himself in theater, choir, and as vocalist for the jazz ensemble. While still in high school he continued local performances, taking part in stagings of Hello, Dolly!, Camelot, The Music Man, Grease, and additional shows. After graduation he attended California State University, Fullerton for roughly a month before relocating to Los Angeles to advance his professional goals. He subsequently performed aboard a cruise ship, appeared in light opera, and participated in numerous theatrical productions. In 2004 he gained wider notice when he portrayed Joshua opposite Val Kilmer in The Ten Commandments: The Musical at the Kodak Theatre. From 2005 to 2008 he toured nationally as a cast member and understudy in Wicked. Outside theatrical work he sang with a rock band and served as a session and demo vocalist.

In 2009 Lambert earned a spot on the eighth season of American Idol after auditioning in San Francisco with “Rock with You” and “Bohemian Rhapsody.” His neo-goth aesthetic, inventive arrangements, and dramatic tenor delivery drew strong critical support throughout the competition. Standout renditions of Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love,” Tears for Fears’ “Mad World,” and Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire” led to a final showdown against Kris Allen, whom he ultimately lost to by a narrow margin. The American Idol judges nevertheless offered unanimous praise, effectively forecasting a prosperous recording career once the program concluded.

Although he did not claim the Idol title, Lambert attracted substantially more notice than fellow contestants in the ensuing months. He graced the cover of Rolling Stone in June, stating in the accompanying piece, “I don’t think it should be a surprise for anyone to hear that I’m gay,” thereby ending public conjecture, and received repeated standing ovations during the extended American Idol tour. He also secured a deal with RCA and began work on his debut album, collaborating with producer Rob Cavallo and drawing material from contributors including Lady Gaga, Linda Perry, Justin Hawkins, and RedOne.

A month prior to the arrival of For Your Entertainment, Lambert introduced his initial single, “Time for Miracles,” from the 2012 soundtrack. The full-length project appeared in late November, one week after Kris Allen’s own debut, and moved nearly 200,000 units in its opening week, surpassing new releases by Rihanna and Lady Gaga. A provocative American Music Awards performance, in which he kissed his male keyboardist and danced suggestively with performers of both genders, generated further coverage along with notable controversy.

Lambert issued the five-track EP Acoustic Live! in December 2010, presenting acoustic renditions of material from For Your Entertainment together with the Tears for Fears cover “Mad World.” The next year he released the concert album and DVD Glam Nation Live, drawn from a 2010 tour stop in Indianapolis. His second full-length studio album, Trespassing, arrived in 2012 and featured contributions from an array of prominent collaborators such as Bruno Mars, Nikka Costa, Sam Sparro, and Pharrell Williams. The set reached number one yet sold fewer copies than its predecessor, prompting Lambert to announce his departure from RCA in 2013. He continued to appear on American Idol periodically and confirmed in 2014 that he would tour with Queen, assuming the frontman position formerly held by the late Freddie Mercury.

In 2015 Lambert became the first former contestant to serve as a judge on American Idol. His subsequent studio album, The Original High—his debut for Warner Bros. after leaving RCA—was crafted with Swedish songwriters and producers Max Martin and Shellback and surfaced in June of that year. Following the Original High tour, he remained active in 2016 by touring with Queen and judging on The X Factor Australia. That year he also appeared on the Steve Aoki and Felix Jaehn track “Can’t Go Home.” A standalone single, “Two Fux,” followed in 2017. The next year he joined Melissa Etheridge for a performance that opened the 29th GLAAD Media Awards and reunited with Queen for a ten-date Las Vegas residency.

Lambert unveiled his fourth studio album, Velvet, in March 2020, exploring his affinity for ’70s- and ’80s-style glam and funk sounds even further. Ahead of the full release he issued the six-track EP Velvet: Side A, which spotlighted the songs “Feel Something” and “Superpower.” Additional tracks on Velvet included “New Eyes,” “Comin’ in Hot,” and “Roses,” the last of which featured legendary Chic guitarist Nile Rodgers. In 2023 he returned with the covers album High Drama, offering vivid reinterpretations of material by Duran Duran, Billie Eilish, Culture Club, Lana Del Rey, and Jobriath.
