The origins of British quartet Addict trace back to childhood companions Mark Aston and James Denham. Aston handled lead vocals while Denham played bass as the pair cycled through multiple groups in their native Cambridge. After moving to London during the early 1990s, they recruited Danish-born guitarist Nikolaj Juel and finalized the lineup with the 1995 arrival of drummer Luke Bullen. The group secured a deal with Big Cat/V2 toward the end of the next year once they had honed their sound through live performances. A limited-edition EP appeared in early 1997, drawing strong press attention and comparisons to Radiohead. Producer David Bianco, fresh from work with Teenage Fanclub, guided the recording of debut album Stones in Los Angeles before its 1998 release. Though reviews remained largely positive, Stones made minimal commercial headway on both sides of the Atlantic, after which Addict fell silent.
