Being a cousin to the Tobias Brothers, both Country Music Hall of Famers, and the granddaughter of film composer Bill Lava, Adie Grey launched her career in the music business while still attending junior high, performing regularly at clubs and coffeehouses of many kinds. She later relocated to Los Angeles to work as a session vocalist, where she met Albert Lee along with other musicians. Lee appeared on her debut album, Brand New Old Time Music, released by Hey Baby!.

In 1989 she settled in Nashville, intending to focus on songwriting. The 1995 appearance of Brand New Old Time Music introduced listeners to a modern survey of country idioms stretching from bluegrass to Cajun. Critical praise followed her 1997 release of Grandpa's Advice, even as Grey sustained her touring commitments.
