Admired by Schumann and Liszt alike for his keyboard prowess, Henselt trained under both Hummel and Sechter. Despite his exceptional command of the instrument, he appeared in public only rarely. After completing a German tour, he took up residence in St Petersburg in 1836, where he was appointed court pianist and instructor to the imperial children. He stressed the value of holding widely spaced chords with the fingers alone and therefore produced the volume Dehnunsstudien expressly to expand the hand, lengthen the reach, and develop independent finger control. His output consisted chiefly of piano études prized for their technical demands; he also wrote concertos, duo pieces, and salon works.
