Adrian Shaw first achieved widespread notice through his role as bassist in the Crazy World of Arthur Brown. Later he performed with numerous other groups, most prominently Atomic Rooster, a project spun off from that same ensemble. Several years after initially declining their offer, he accepted an invitation to join Hawkwind in 1977. The band chose to disband the following year, again leaving Shaw without an ongoing group. By then he had already appeared on five of their releases: Quark, Strangeness and Charm, PXR5, Live 1976-77, Hawkwind Live and Hawklords, and Free Festival. The final three of those titles belong to the Weird Tapes series. After taking a break, Shaw reunited with Magic Muscle, a band he had previously played with. That lineup issued the album 100 Miles Below in 1989. The record was in fact Magic Muscle’s fourth, coming after Laughs and Thrills (1972), The Pipe, the Roar and the Grid (1970), and Living Weeds From Ancient Seeds (1970). Shaw’s next affiliation was with Bevis Frond. Although he participated in one further Magic Muscle album, Gulp!, released in 1991, he concentrated his energies on Bevis Frond, his own solo material, and co-managing Woronzow Records.
