Though their existence proved fleeting, Advertising still delivered one brilliantly eccentric album in the form of 1978's Jingles. The Cambridge pop band, rooted in the punk era, came together in 1976 with Tot Taylor and Simon Boswell at its core, each handling guitar and vocals. Taylor's prior involvement included stints in A Special Moment and the Blue Kittens, a theatrical outfit that produced nothing but managed to craft a full musical. The surge of punk prompted Taylor to launch a pop group, and alongside Boswell the pair settled on the name Advertising. Their initial single, "Lipstick," narrowly bypassed the UK charts in 1977 despite clear merit, yet the outfit secured a deal with EMI Records to record their debut, Jingles. Commercial disappointment soon triggered the group's dissolution. Taylor promptly launched a solo path, whereas Boswell first established himself as a producer before founding Live Wire and Data.
