Aflak

France-based ensemble Aflak has refreshed Morocco’s longstanding musical heritage. The project unites the Marakesh-born Fayet Brothers—Aziz, Lucien, and Jamal—who continue to build upon their homeland’s ancient traditions by blending Western pop elements with contemporary tools such as electric guitars and synthesizers, resulting in the hybrid style they term “marock’n’roll.” Immersed from childhood in the customary sounds of Marrakesh, the brothers began shaping this distinctive sound after relocating to Mourenx, France, in 1980. More than ten years of performances across France preceded their initial recordings, which introduced the music to listeners worldwide during the early ’90s.
