Gothenburg, Sweden's Agent Blå fuse post-punk with dream pop to create the volatile sound they label "death pop." Their 2017 album Agent Blue highlighted the music's inherent turbulence, whereas Morning Thoughts in 2019 showcased increasing sophistication across the songwriting.

Vocalist Emelie Alatalo, bassist/vocalist Josefine Cover, guitarists Felix Skörvald and Lucas Gustavsson, and drummer Arvid Christensen first crossed paths as teenagers while appearing in separate groups at an open mic night. A shared admiration for Slowdive and Joy Division drew them together, prompting the 2015 formation of Agent Blå—Swedish for "agent blue," denoting a variety of arsenic. Luxury Records, which also housed kindred acts Westkust and Makthaverskan, issued their debut single "Beach" before the year ended. Subsequent 2015 and 2017 singles such as "Strand," "Don't Talk to Strangers," "Rote Learning," and "Frustrerad" were later compiled on the debut album Agent Blue, which Tobias Bauer and Makthaverskan's Gustav Data recorded.

The Medium Rare EP arrived in 2018. Bauer then joined the lineup on keyboards ahead of the next full-length, Morning Thoughts, whose tracks integrated the group's darker tendencies with its sweeter melodies in a more fluid manner than prior work. Luxury Records and Kanine Records issued the album in May 2019.
