Hailing from Argentina, Agustín Pereyra Lucena worked throughout his life as both guitarist and composer. His arrival came in 1948, after which he trained in Buenos Aires under Alejandro Maza, Lucio Núñez, Jorge Calandrelli, and José Tsilicas, yet his path turned toward an accomplished role as interpreter of Brazilian bossa nova. Vinícius de Moraes, Baden Powell, and Toquinho expressed particular esteem for his distinctive merger of tango, jazz, and French Impressionism within that idiom, and 1970 brought the appearance of the first among his eight solo albums. The following year produced a notable duo recording alongside Naná Vasconcelos. Across a span of four decades he performed internationally, whether alone, with the Candeais and Trio de Janeiro groups, or in support of Brazilian figures including Carlos Lyra, Miúcha, Quarteto Em Cy, Celia Vaz, Dori and Nanna Caymmi, and numerous others. An extended illness preceded his death in 2019.
