Biography
Born in Jamaica and now based in Toronto, Ahdri Zhina Mandiela works as both a dub poet and a theater director. Sister Vision Press issued her two poetry collections, Speshal Rikwes in 1985 and Dark Diaspora....In Dub in 1991, while she has also released the cassettes First and Last and Barefoot and Black, each pairing her verses with music, along with the 15-track CD Step/Into My Hat. Her contributions appear in the 1997 autobiographical documentary On/Black/Stage/Women: A Diasporic Rag, and she serves as editor of the poetry series On/Black/Stage/Women: The Playwrites. Additional selections of her writing feature in anthologies of contemporary Canadian poets such as The Last Word from Insomniac Press and Wheel Come Again from Goose Lane Editions.
