Biography
Formed in 1981 under the name African Woman, Akabu holds the distinction of being arguably the first all-female reggae group. The original roster featured Vyris Edghill, Valerie Skeete, Madeleine "Jo" Edghill, Paulette "Levi" Coke, Samantha Edghill, Diane "De Bass" White, Caroline Williams, and Shelome "Issachar" Coke. This same configuration produced the debut album African Woman Abroad. The collective adopted the name Akabu in 1988 and issued a self-titled album that year. Appearances on assorted compilations and related projects have followed ever since.
