Biography
The evolution of bhangra finds a clear illustration through the work of Alaap. Established during 1977 within Southall, the group issued its first recording on an independent imprint devoted to longstanding Punjabi folk traditions. Deepak Khazanchi’s production input, together with the driving force of disco and rock, led Alaap to adopt electric instrumentation and drum machines. Later projects addressed devotional subjects in Shabe Ghat Ram Bole or welcomed guest vocalists including Asha Bhosie on Chham Chham Machdi Phiran and Anuradha Paudwal on Na Dil Mang Ve.
