A winding path ultimately brought James Donahower, frontman and founding member of the American power pop and rock band Alablaster, to the group’s creation. During the late ’90s he launched Dirty Pictures, a Prague, Czechoslovakia–based project that drew widespread notice and scored three hit singles. That profile prompted British promoter Mean Fiddler to predict imminent stardom for the act, yet Donahower dissolved the lineup and relocated to the United States, where he assembled Alablaster. In 2001 the new band entered the studio to cut its debut full-length album, Ancient Ruins, Modern Inventions, which Veronica Records issued in summer 2002. Thereafter the group sustained an active touring schedule across the United States, appearing at assorted festivals and industry showcases.
