Born on 15 October 1934 in London, England, Elsdon first concentrated on the trumpet before shifting to jazz and joining numerous British traditional groups during the 1950s. After his profile had risen, he launched his own band in the early 1960s, yet evolving musical tastes kept it from reaching the popularity attained by many peers in the same style. He nevertheless maintained the ensemble through steady engagements at clubs and pubs, along with occasional bookings at higher-profile sites. Across the 1960s and 1970s he accompanied visiting American jazz and blues performers on their UK dates. In the 1980s, while his band continued, he also performed with the Midnite Follies Orchestra and with further units directed by Keith Nichols. Though long tied to the traditional jazz circuit, Elsdon’s robust playing sits easily within the mainstream.
