Biography
The older sibling of renowned saxophonist Wayne Shorter also took up the trumpet yet never matched his brother's exceptional gifts or widespread recognition. Alan Shorter possessed only modest technical command on the instrument, though his performances could still convey genuine emotion. He moved further than Wayne into free jazz environments, appearing on Archie Shepp's Four for Trane (Impulse!, 1965), Wayne's The All Seeing Eye (Blue Note, 1965), and several obscure dates throughout the 1960s before withdrawing from public attention. Both of the albums he recorded as leader have remained out of print, save for a limited-edition reissue of Orgasm (Verve, 1968) issued in the late 1990s.
