Biography
Pianist Alasdair Beatson covers an extensive spectrum of performance formats that encompass solo recitals, concerto appearances, and collaborative chamber work. He actively promotes new compositions while programming a blend of standard repertory and lesser-known pieces across both live events and recorded projects.
Born in Perth, Scotland, on March 30, 1980, Beatson received his initial instruction locally from Claire Gallagher. At age 18 he relocated to London to study with John Blakely at the Royal College of Music before continuing at Indiana University under Menahem Pressler. Early recognition came through several awards, among them the Making Music Award for Young Concert Artists and second prize in the Shanghai International Piano Competition. He has appeared as soloist with ensembles that include the Britten Sinfonia, the Moscow Virtuosi, and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Recital engagements have taken him repeatedly to London’s Wigmore Hall, with performances scheduled even amid the 2020-2021 coronavirus pandemic. His chamber-music partners range from cellist Pieter Wispelwey and violinist Pekka Kuusisto to the Doric String Quartet. Beatson has maintained close ties with living composers, giving premieres of pieces by Harrison Birtwistle, Heinz Holliger, and Helena Winkelman. He conducts summer courses and master classes at several British institutions, notably the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, and the Birmingham Conservatoire at Birmingham City University. He established and directs the French chamber-music festival Musique à Marsac.
His discography opened in 2009 with a Somm recital featuring music by Schumann, Grieg, Brahms, and Berg. Additional releases have appeared on Champs Hill, Claves, and BIS; the latter issued his 2021 recording of Beethoven violin sonatas with Viktoria Mullova. The same year also brought the solo album Aus Wien on the PentaTone Classics label.
