Emerging from New York City as an enigmatic and conceptually driven performer, Aleister X made his initial appearance through a string of EP releases toward the close of the 2000s. Participation in the sessions for dub icon Lee Perry’s 2008 album Repentance preceded X’s own debut, the four-track EP Bangers and Beans, which surfaced in late 2009 and displayed his singular mix of distorted psychedelia and gritty U.K.-style street rap. The Git followed in 2010, with Thong Beach arriving two years later. Throughout this span X sharpened his stage presence, appearing in black metal face paint and mismatched outfits such as boxing robes or basketball jerseys. A run of warped videos paved the way for Half-Speed Mastered, his first proper full-length, issued in early 2013 after being mixed by Andrew W.K. and released on the new Steev Mike label. Later that year he resurfaced with the holiday single NSFW XMAS, then delivered sophomore album Keepin’ It Real in spring 2014.
