Biography
Alessandro Sgobbio, a pianist and composer from Europe, has built recognition through his meticulously shaped modern creative jazz that incorporates classical influences. His initial outing arrived in 2010 via the solo piano album Aforismi Protestanti, followed in 2013 by the trio session Charm. He also shares leadership of the Pericopes duo with saxophonist Emiliano Vernizzi. After small-group releases including 2018’s Silent Fires and 2021’s Transparence, he returned to unaccompanied work on 2022’s Piano Music.
Born in Italy, Sgobbio trained at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo and the Boito Conservatory of Music in Parma. He entered the recording sphere in 2010 with Aforismi Protestanti, a set of introspective solo piano pieces. Charm appeared three years later, presenting his trio of bassist Xuan Lindenmeyer and drummer Frédéric Chapperon. An exploratory duo with saxophonist Emiliano Vernizzi yielded 2014’s Frames and 2019’s Legacy. His honors include first-place finishes at the Umbria Jazz Contest and the Padova Carrarese Prize. The 2019 small-group album Forests featured singer Karoline Wallace, trumpeter Hilde Marie Holsen, and violinist Håkon Aase. Another small-group date, Transparence, appeared in 2019 alongside guitarist Hilmar Jensson, bassist Jo Berger Myhre, and drummer Øyvind Skarbø.
