Aletheian emerged from Pennsylvania in 1997 as Christian rockers whose sound matched the ferocity of any demon-worshiping Norwegian death metal group. They first assembled under the name Crutch, issuing several independent albums before their third LP, Hope Prevails, expanded their audience. After a 2003 lineup shift, the band adopted the name Aletheian—Greek for “truth”—and issued the full-length concept album Apolutrosis. Although personnel and moniker differed, the music retained its core: messages of positivity encased in a fierce shell of fiery fury. In 2005 the group self-produced Dying Vine, then spent the next three years promoting it through club dates and festivals alongside metal megaliths Biohazard, Buried Alive, and Underoath, among others. Ironclad Recordings later stepped in, issuing a remastered edition of Dying Vine to wider audiences in 2008.
