Biography
Born on 14 April 1931 in Cambusbarron, Stirling, Scotland, Alex Atterson died on 21 September 1996 in Norwich, Norfolk, England. As a traditional singer he sustained the Scottish folk repertoire through vigorous renditions of Charles Causley’s verse and longstanding ballads. After qualifying as an industrial chemist he moved first to Peterborough and later to Norwich, where he made his permanent home. In the late 1960s he played a leading role in founding the Norwich Folk Festival and at the same period began working as a professional performer. He secured appearances by prominent artists at the festival, which continued until 1982, even though he could offer no guarantee of payment. During those years he issued two albums devoted to Scottish folk material, the stronger being Pushing The Business On in 1977. In 1979, however, he left the professional stage to accept a more stable post as a teacher. By the time he retired in July 1996 he had become head of science at Acle High School.
