Biography
Alex Goldfarb, who calls Minneapolis home, draws from the same singer-songwriter traditions embodied by Tim Buckley, Greg Brown, and Rickie Lee Jones. His self-titled debut cassette generated significant interest within the underground folk community, leading to a signing with Painted Sun, the independent label run by fellow artist Forest Sun. Under this imprint, Goldfarb released his second album, Magnifying Glass, during June 2000. Also helmed by Sun, the recording took place in an isolated part of Northern California. The project highlights Goldfarb’s powerfully resonant singing, introspective songwriting, and rhythmic guitar approach, with Sun contributing on mandolin, Rhodes piano, and percussion. Goldfarb’s performances emphasize improvisation and frequently incorporate input from listeners, as he alternates between solo sets and collaborations in Minneapolis venues ranging from cabarets to nightclubs, including a slot at the 2000 Winnipeg Folk Festival.
