Born in Berkeley, California, to a freelance writer and a university administrator, Alexa Weber Morales entered a household steeped in music. Classical piano lessons began for her at five, followed at eight by her first unaccompanied vocal appearance during an elementary-school recital. She pursued a languages major at Bryn Mawr College, taking part in theater and cabaret productions there before withdrawing in her second year. Returning to the Bay Area, she held an assortment of temporary positions while steadily building recognition on the regional music circuit. Marriage to a husband who had recently moved from Mexico deepened her bicultural musical outlook. Work as an editor for a Spanish-language magazine ensued, resulting in repeated visits to Brazil and other South American countries that molded her singular style fusing salsa, jazz, and Brazilian influences. After leaving the publication, she committed herself wholly to music, issuing the albums Jazzmã©Rica in 2004 and Vagabundeo in 2007, both produced by Wayne Wallace.
